JRD Tata Memorial Awards

Mr JRD Tata built a strong base for a social movement to stabilize India’s population growth, to secure a better life for its people. As a tribute to its visionary leader, the Governing Board of Population Foundation of India instituted a national award in his name in 1996. The JRD Tata Memorial Awards are given to states and districts that have demonstrated outstanding achievements in population and reproductive health and family planning programmes. Since 1997, in six consecutive rounds, various states and districts have been awarded the JRD Tata Memorial Awards. The winners are selected on the basis of their current levels of performance on crucial indicators, as well as the pace of progress achieved over time.

JRD Tata Memorial Oration

In 1990, Population Foundation of India instituted a lecture series, inviting eminent national and international leaders to focus on critical issues related to population, health and development. In 1995, the series was re-christened as ‘JRD Tata Memorial Oration’, in memory of its founder Chairman. This oration serves as an occasion to highlight key population issues and features interactive discussions with experts. Previous orations have been delivered by Dr Amartya Sen, Dr Sowmya Swaminathan, Mr Chandrasekhar, Mr I K Gujral, Dr Manmohan Singh, Mr Jamshed Irani, among others.

16th JRD Tata Memorial Oration

The 16th JRD Tata Memorial Oration delivered by Mr N Chandrasekaran, Chairman of Tata Sons on December 18, 2023

Natarajan Chandrasekaran (Chandra) is the Chairman of Tata Sons, the holding company and promoter of all Tata Group companies. Chandra joined the Board of Tata Sons in October 2016 and was appointed Chairman in January 2017. He also chairs the Boards of several group operating companies, including Tata Steel, Tata Motors, Tata Power, Air India, Tata Chemicals, Tata Consumer Products, Indian Hotel Company and Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) – of which he was the Chief Executive Officer from 2009-17. His appointment as Chairman of Tata Sons, followed a 30-year business career at TCS, which he joined from university. Chandra rose through the ranks at TCS to become the CEO and Managing Director of the leading global IT solution and consulting firm. Under his leadership, TCS generated total revenues of US $16.5 billion in 2015-16 and consolidated its position as the largest private sector employer in India and the country’s most valuable company.

15th JRD Tata Memorial Oration

Population Foundation of India as a tribute to its visionary leader, JRD Tata, organises the JRD Tata Oration as a lecture series on population and development issues. The annual lecture series, instituted in 1991, `Encounter with Population Crisis’ invited notable international and national guest speakers to deliver a lecture focusing on critical issues related to population and development; and was dedicated to the memory of JRD Tata in 1995, PFI’s silver jubilee year. Previously, the Orations have been delivered by Mr. I.K. Gujral (former Prime Minister), Dr. Nafis Sadik, Mr Jamshed J Irani, Dr. Manmohan Singh (former Prime Minister), Mr Nitin Desai, Prof. Amartya Sen and Dr. Babatunde Osotimehin among others.

The 15th JRD Tata Memorial Oration was delivered by Dr Soumya Swaminathan, Chief Scientist, Word Health Organization. 

14th JRD Tata Memorial Oration

Population Foundation of India (PFI) as a tribute to its visionary leader, JRD Tata, organises the JRD Tata Oration as a lecture series on population and development issues.

PFI has also instituted the JRD Tata Memorial Awards as national awards for the best performing state and districts which have demonstrated outstanding achievements in the population and reproductive health and family planning programme. This is the 6th edition of the JRD Tata Memorial Awards.
